roatia is an Adriatic and central European country, placed between Danube on the Northeast, Istria on the west and Boka Kotorska on the Southeast. Its land covers 56.538 square kilometres, and its sea 31.900 square kilometres. According to the 2001 census it has 4,5 million inhabitants. The capital Zagreb has population of roughly a million people. The beginning of the tourist development goes back to the 19 century when Croatia was a part of Austro-Hungarian empire, and when the first hotels were built. More intensive development started in fifties of 20th century while in sixties Croatia already was in the company of leading Mediterranean tourist countries.
Istria, the largest peninsula (3.160 square kilometres) in the waters of the Adriatic, which is a part of Mediterra-nean, penetrates deep into the central Europe, between the Alps and Dinarian mountains, so it is a natural gate for central Europe to the Adriatic. Due to the Mediterranean climate, winters are snowless, summers are long, sunny and warm. Istria is one of the sunniest oasis in Europe. The 45th parallel and 14th meridian are cutting it. Three types of soil differ three parts of the peninsula -White, Red and Grey Istria. Numberless natural bays and islands, richness of shapes, evergreen vegetation, cultivated fields and the harmony of urbanised land offer the specific picturesque countryside. Three ethnic groups met here - Romans, Germans and Slavs. They all left their traces. Smaller urbanised villages along the coast are of special interest since tourist resorts are attached to them. Istria is a cradle of glagolitic culture and Croatian literacy. The oldest European written diplomatic document is Istarski razvod written in glagolitic alphabet as well as Rocki misal, which is the oldest printed book on the Balkans. Istria makes 36 percent of the total of the tourist visits in Croatia. It accommodates more than 2 million tourists per year, and tourist capacity offers accommodation for 250 000 guests in the same time. Istria itself has some 200 000 inhabitants. According to new territory division Istria is one of the counties, and its central town is Pazin. Its heraldic symbol is a goat.

This territory is spreading from Zeiena Laguna in the west till Valkanela in the south. This is the part of the istrian coast abounding with bays, peninsulas and islands. Funtana has some 1000 inhabitants. Funtana is surrounded by hilly country covered with vineyards, olive groves, fields and meadows, oak and pine forests that are frequently spreading till shoreline. Mild Mediterranean climate even in coldest January insures average temperature of 5 grades Celsius and in warmest August 24 grades Celsius. Sea is clean and bathing season starts in May and ends in October. These climatic and natural advantages as well as being s neighbour to Central Europe had a powerful impact on tourist development. Funtana's inhabitants turned to tourism more seriously in sixties. Since then a number of car camps, hotels and significant number of accommodation in private homes have been built on the shore between Zeiena Laguna and Valkanela. Appropriate infrastructure was also constructed as well as other important commodities for thousands of tourists that spend their holidays on Funtana's shores in summer.
