BOLJUN is probably of prehistoric origin, with
unbroken continuity to the present. Archeologic findings testify to the antique period.
The settlement reached peak growth during the Middle ages, during which were built the
castle, bulwarks, residential houses, communications, and the church of SS. Cosmas and
Damian (sveti Kuzma i Damjan), the parish church of St. George (sveti Juraj) etc. In the
17th and 18th centuries, Boljun declined in importance.
The castle represents one in a series of fortifications erected along the Rasa River,
perhaps as early as the 10th of 11th centuries. The present parish church of St. George,
with a late Gothic sanctuary and opulent altar, dates from the 16th century. In the
vicinity of the church is a covered loggia.
The small church of St. Cosmas and Damian built in the Romanesque period and remodelled in
the 18th century is outstanding architecturally. The interior was formerly decorated with
frescoes that have been entirely lost. |
